Denim Days Returns to New York with New Speaker Series

Spearheaded by denim insiders, the New York Denim Days connects denim professionals, designers and brands to denim consumers. The event, sponsored by Tencel, brings together denim lovers in a festival atmosphere with vintage markets, live music, demonstrations, hands on workshops and activities for children. The event introduces a robust line-up of expert speakers to the agenda. On Sept. 22, Tencel will host a panel discussion about the evolution of denim with 3×1 founder Scott Morrison, “Godfather of Denim” Adriano Goldschmied and Reformation director of denim and special projects Jordan Nodarse. Denim made with Tencel fibers will be front and center at New York Denim Days. The Tencel branded booth will be stocked with denim by Mavi, 3×1, Reformation and Paulita Carlotta and an exclusive Denim Days T-shirt designed by Adriano Goldschmied made with Tencel branded lyocell fibers. Proceeds from the sales will benefit Greenpeace. The team at Rivet partnered with Tencel, too, for a collection of men’s jeans launching at Denim Days. The Edit Denim x Rivet collection pays homage to the Americas. Stretch fabrications are made with cotton, spandex and Tencel from the U.S., and Mexico’s Kaltex produced the fabrics and garments.

The narrative continued with a shop-in-shop that highlighted the soft hand feel and performance attributes the fiber brings to denim with styles from 3×1, Mavi, Edit Denim x Rivet and more. Visitors were also encouraged to take selfies with a tree covered in patchwork Tencel denim.

Denim Days Returns to New York for Fall Festival

And as the title sponsor of the event, Tencel will create a “shop-in-shop,” offering a selection of garments made with Tencel from brands such as 3X1, Mavi, Reformation and Godfather of Denim among others, the organization said. Its “interactive forest” will show the process of how denim is made from trees and offer an “Instagram moment” for event-goers as they enter the show. Tencel in denim has risen in popularity throughout the industry as more brands prioritize sustainability, as Tencel is derived from sustainably harvested trees and praised for its softness and low environmental impacts, the company said. Tricia Carey, Tencel’s director of global business development,  said, “We are pleased to be returning to New York Denim Days as a sponsor and bringing ‘Tencel Feels So Right’ to consumers. It is amazing to see denim enthusiasts discover how trees are made into jeans and feel the comfort of Tencel denim.” Olah added that Tencel “is not only a beautiful fiber that makes for incredible denim, it is one of the most important fibers in the denim industry and is helping to make the denim industry more sustainable and environmentally responsible.”

“Customers were asking us about how we can make trees into denim—the process that’s involved,” said Tricia Carey, director of global business development for denim at Lenzing. “They really liked seeing and touching the raw fiber. Then when customers could feel and even try on denim with Tencel they immediately understood.”

The items were made with a recipe of sustainable alternative fibers including Tencel, Repreve and Cordura, and using the mill’s cleanest indigo dyeing technology, Crystal Clear. The hydro-free dye process is designed to leave clean and recyclable water effluent without any salt by-products and uses 70 percent less chemicals.

DENIMOLOGY Re-Caps NYC Denim Days Festival

Monitored by Tencel’s director of global business development for denim at Lenzing, Tricia Carey, we had the opportunity to listen to two of the most influential denim gurus, the father of denim, Adriano Goldschmied, and Scott Morrison, creator and founder of 3×1, as well as the “new kid on the block”, Jordan Nodarse, head of Reformation and former creator of Grlfrnd Jeans. For Adriano Goldschmied, sustainability has been a long road that started in 1992 when he became the first designer to use Tencel lyocell in denim for AGOLDE. He opted for the alternative fiber derived from sustainably harvested trees in an effort to reduce the brand’s water and energy consumption.

That same narrative led Reformation 25 years later to adopt Tencel into its denim repertoire when it launched Reformation Jeans last year, the sustainable brand’s first line of stretch and comfort stretch denim.
