Celebrating International Women’s Day

Celebrating International Women’s Day

Taking today to shout out to the many incredible women in the denim industry.

It was actually over a century ago that women started this celebration. In 1909, the first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States. The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honor of the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions. In America in the early twentieth century, working women were coming together to fight for labor rights as well as other rights, like voting. The International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU) became one of the largest unions voicing the concerns of women workers.

The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day in the International Women’s Year, 1975. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the United Nations Day for women’s rights and world peace.

Here are some of our featured articles from the past highlighting the bold and bright women of the Blue World.
