Denim Head Threads: Inside the Closet of Cone Denim’s Pierette Scavuzzo

Denim Head Threads: Inside the Closet of Cone Denim’s Pierette Scavuzzo

Individuals in the denim industry are focused on making goods that wind up in other people’s wardrobes, but how do they curate their own closets? This series offers an inside look into the personal style and shopping behavior of the people behind jeans.

Pierette Scavuzzo is the New York-based design director of Cone Denim, which supplies denim textiles to brands like Levi’s and Lee. Read on to see Pierette’s style philosophy on color and fit.

Carved in Blue: Describe your (denim) personal style:

Pierette: Eclectic, relaxed, altered classic

Carved in Blue: What’s your preferred cut for denim? What do you like about it?

Pierette: I prefer a looser fit that is slightly higher waisted. I like when there is some structure to the waist, but then a looser fit allows me to move and groove.

Carved in Blue: Who is your denim style icon?

Pierette: I tend to be inspired by people who represent a sort of alter ego of mine. My personal color palette is neutral with an occasional pop of color—I love Andre 3000’s bold style and have always loved what he does with denim.

I’m also inspired by the people and community I’ve been fortunate to work with. Una Murphy of Levi’s—I’ve always loved the way she customizes her fits and makes it truly hers. Miss Kara Nicholas was always inspiring from the beginnings of my career—so unique, so effortlessly cool.

Carved in Blue: What’s the oldest pair that’s still in rotation?

Pierette: A tailored Levi 505 jean from 2011. The Levi’s master tailor at the time was doing a few one-of-a-kind garments. This is jean pieced with two vintage fabrics—I estimate that one is from the ‘80s and one from the ‘70s, most likely Cone Denim 501 fabrics. This is still one of my favorites to this day, I don’t think I will ever get tired of it.

Carved in Blue: What does Carved in Blue mean to you?

Pierette: Collective denim storytelling and community, leaders in sustainable education.
