Lenzing Streamlines Lyocell Denim Laundering
One area of the denim world that is attracting innovation investments is the laundry. Over time, the conventional techniques to give denim its signature look have evolved to become more efficient and eco-friendly.
Denim made with Lenzing’s fibers—including TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal—responds favorably to some of the latest laundry advances, including lasers, ozone and more. The Lenzing team and Jeanologia often collaborate on projects to finish TENCEL™ Lyocell jeans with low-impact solutions, while still getting creative looks.
In order to provide a reference for these next-generation laundry processes, Lenzing conducted a study and updated its Laundry Manual. The results are very promising indeed. The research confirms that TENCEL™ denim is compatible with laser, ozone and nebulization processes and as well as the low-liquid ratio machines, which are key for reducing water consumption. On the other hand, in terms of the unique features of TENCEL™ denim such as softness and a drapey hand feel, there is no compromise. The final product embraces the same product benefits.
Lastly, a shortcut process has been discovered during the research. The minimum two-step fibrillation process, which typically was done in wet conditions and therefore necessitated a subsequent drying process, can now be handled in one single ozone process that enables the same benefit. That gives a lot of resource savings.
