Lenzing Earns Top Scores from Canopy and EcoVadis

Benchmarking across the industry is a valuable instrument in pushing sustainability ahead, since it allows companies to see where they stack up.

In two recent sets of rankings from Canopy and EcoVadis, Lenzing Group received top marks, reflecting the work being done in areas such as responsible sourcing, labor and environmental impact.

Canopy’s annual Hot Button Report dives into the top 34 man-made cellulosic fiber producers’ track records on activities such as wood sourcing and production. In the 10th edition of the rankings, released this October, Lenzing Group tied for the lead with Tangshan Sanyou with the top score of 34.5 out of a possible 40 points. Canopy also noted that our fibers have no known risk of sourcing from ancient or endangered forests.

Our new Brazilian mill, LD Cellulose S.A., is the first dissolving pulp mill to produce 100 percent Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified pulp. We have also increased our use of FSC pulp across our operations.

In addition to wood procurement, Canopy recognized our efforts to support biodiversity in Austria, Albania, Burundi, Brazil, China, DR Congo and Tanzania. We also received recognition for our chemical management, earning an 8 out of a possible 8.

“This award is more than just a result – it is proof of our role as an industry benchmark. Sustainability must be viewed holistically and with foresight, and everything new that we create today is a point of reference for the future,” says Rohit Aggarwal, CEO of Lenzing AG.

EcoVadis’ ratings take a broader look at ESG, encompassing the environment, labor and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. For the fifth year in a row, we achieved a platinum rating, the highest possible medal, putting us among the top 1 percent of the approximate 150,000 companies assessed by EcoVadis.

Over the last year, Lenzing made the most progress in ethics and labor and human rights.

“Five consecutive platinum ratings—that is more than recognition, it is proof of leadership,” said Aggarwal. “We don’t just follow standards, we set them. At Lenzing, sustainability is a strategic and measurable value driver—for our company, our partner and for society.”
