Bloggers: I Love Jeans
Perhaps boasting what’s probably the most coveted URL in denim: ilovejeans.com, the blogger behind the site fits the bill for the three-letter phrase.
Besides loving denim herself, Sam Remer loves helping other women love their denim too—by teaching them how to shop for a shape that suits. And she’s equipped to do it since she spent 15 years as a fashion stylist before launching what started as a denim portal to help women figure out their fits at a time when low-rise denim was the be-all.
Since its launch in 2006, ilovejeans.com has evolved into more than just a platform for finding denim worth falling in love with, but an outlet for Sam to share her style advice and robust denim knowledge.
Carved in Blue caught up with Sam to find out what the brains behind ilovejeans.com and Instagram @ilovejeans really loves about jeans.
Carved in Blue: Why did you start blogging?
Sam: I started blogging over 10 years ago now quite reluctantly as ilovejeans.com was a Denim Portal to help women find the correct fitting jeans for their body-shape. Soon after launching in 2006 ilovejeans.com became an online denim emporium stocking premium brands. My PR at the time insisted that blogging was really important for people to see the person behind the brand (sell more jeans), so it wasn’t a natural start for me.
Carved in Blue: What is your take on denim both in your personal life and in business?
Sam: I wear jeans 90 percent of the time. Denim is woven into both my personal life and business. If I’m dressing for an evening out I’d rather choose a coated jean or a statement jean than a dress any day!
Carved in Blue: What was your first pair of jeans?
Sam: My first pair of jeans (that was important to me) was a pair of Pepe skin-tight jeans with a crocodile laser print, circa Michael Jackson Thriller Video. I’m showing my age.
Carved in Blue: What is your motto/style angle?
Sam: Shop for your shape! When you know which denim brands/styles suit your shape, buying jeans becomes an enjoyable experience. I blog a lot about body shapes and how to find the perfect pair of jeans. I also like it when jeans have a multi purpose or figure fixing value to them.
Carved in Blue: What is missing from the denim market now?
Sam: Jeans for different body shapes, especially an ‘Apple’ body shape. Retailers have stepped up the choice for the ‘Curvy’ girl but not the Apple, which is a massive untapped market. You heard it here first!
Carved in Blue: What’s your favorite denim brand right now?
Sam: I don’t really have a favorite as I’m a bit of a denim whore—if I like it and it fits, well then I’ll buy it. When I was a jeans specialist at Liberty London I got to try lots of denim brands, so my go-to jean would be from J Brand, Frame or Rag and Bone. I’m truly impressed with Good American, Khloe Kardashian & Emma Grede’s, year-old denim brand. From a denim stylist’s point of view, it’s an interesting brand as they cater for a massive size range, 00 to 24 plus. I like the way they show the same style of jean on three different size models.
Carved in Blue: Who do you look for denim inspiration?
Sam: I look at Instagram daily as my feed is full of denimheads. Vintage and reworked Levis such as Re/Done, Vetements, Urban Renewal & Bliss and Mischief offer the best inspiration of old into new ideas.
Carved in Blue: Where do you shop for your denim?
Sam: If I’m buying a style I’ve had before I’ll track it down online and the price may be the deciding factor. For something new I shop in Liberty, Selfridges, Zara and Trilogy.
Carved in Blue: What does “Carved in Blue” mean to you?
Sam: I’m inspired by lots of sides of the denim industry, from the creation of new fabric technology, to what it does when worn and how it makes the wearer feel. Artist Ian Berry creates the most amazing intricate pictures from pieces of jeans. Neoki.it recycled bags made out of vintage denim. Carved in Blue means the coming together of old and new creating the now. Bringing people who love the blue stuff together.
