Blogger’s View: Indigo Visual Mavens
For some really visual inspiration from the denim industry, Carved in Blue sought out Instagram’s selvedge queens and influencers posting the latest jean trends for their industry-focused followers. With snaps of denim washhouses, model photo shoots and Fashion Week outfits, these influencers are demonstrating how to capitalize on all that’s great about denim.
Carved in Blue caught up with three denim Instagrammers who provided insights on street style, upcoming spring trends and the pair of jeans they wished were available IRL.
For the denim-obsessed individual, Double Denim Addiction (@double_denim_addiction) serves up images of everyday fashion. The brainchild of Nicole Johnson, an Australia-based denim connoisseur, Double Denim Addiction sets out to equip jean lovers with daily style inspiration and global indigo culture.
Carved in Blue: What’s your favorite denim trend for Spring 2018?
Nicole: I’m loving big puffy shoulders and sleeves, as well as pussy bow denim shirts.
Carved in Blue: Where do you get your greatest denim inspiration from?
Nicole: My biggest inspiration is really from people I see on the street styling and doing denim their own way. I get so much joy when I see someone doubling up their denim and doing their own denim thing around my home town of Melbourne. I also love lots of denim looks I’m seeing out of Scandinavia.
Carved in Blue: What’s the one thing you’d like to see in denim that you haven’t seen anyone create yet?
Nicole: An Olympic figure skater winning gold in a denim costume complete with sequins.
Carved in Blue: If you could describe denim in one word, what would it be?
Nicole: Versatile.

What’s a career in denim like? Amanda Hill, the founder of denim Instagram account @23oz.indigo, could provide a perspective on the industry’s behind-the-scenes operations.
The denim creative’s account provides followers with a visual outlook on the backend happenings of denim, like design, manufacturing and washing.
On Amanda’s page, images of denim fibers, brick-and-mortar denim outposts and jean production hubs, abound. Followers, including consumers, can see what happens with a pair of jeans before they hit the shelves.
Carved in Blue: What’s your favorite denim trend for Spring 2018?
Amanda: I’m loving the clean saturated raw indigo looks especially in straight and wide leg crop styles. They are easy to wear and can be dressed up for a tailored feel or toned down with Vans for a street style version.
Carved in Blue: Where do you get your greatest denim inspiration from?
Amanda: There is not one place or thing that I can say is my inspiration as it is a combination of so many things coming together. People in the creative and denim industry doing incredible work and hearing them talk with such passion is a great source of inspiration.
The fabric itself can provoke ideas especially if it has an interesting texture or finish. I always love to see the denim process in the factories and mills as there are so many amazing images of the machinery and equipment and it is a good reminder of the journey it goes through.
Travelling is a massive contributor to the inspiration bank, as there are so many visuals around us all the time that can set off the imagination, like a tube station that has an interesting tile layout, a sun bleached/faded motorbike cover on the side of the street, an ornate doorway, a carpark with moss on the walls creating a great texture, a wall of intricate worn away graffiti, or ripples created in the sand by the sea.
People watching is also another good way to gather ideas for different ways of styling and seeing trends emerging.
Denim inspiration comes from everywhere and anywhere.
Carved in Blue: What’s the one thing you’d like to see in denim that you haven’t seen anyone create yet?
Amanda: I have seen so many things in denim, G-Star’s raw objects projects, Christopher Raeburn’s collaboration with Disney producing the beautiful Minnie and Mickey Mouse ruck sacks and more recently the images of the amazing work done by Ian Berry in “The Secret Garden Denim Art Installation.”
It is hard to think of anything that hasn’t already been done…on a serious note, I would like to see a collaboration throughout the denim industry to agree on standardized regulations and certifications to eliminate the many variations and the expense these entail. On a lighter note, I would like to see more unexpected collaborations between people from all different walks of life and denim as this is the way true innovation thrives.
Carved in Blue: If you could describe denim in one word, what would it be?
Amanda: Versatile.

The Jeans Blog (@the_jeans_blog), a one-stop digital magazine for all things denim, provides many updates about celebrities’ favorite jeans or brands that are stepping up their selvedge game.
Founded in 2014, The Jeans Blog features the knowledge of many denim experts who specialize in different denim segments, like men’s and women’s. The Jeans Blog’s website and Instagram also provide creative content on what’s happening in denim and ongoing jean street style looks.
Denim lovers can also take part in the action, since The Jeans Blog recently launched a jeans forum, where an online community consults visitors on denim-focused topics, including raw denim, gender-neutral denim and what’s happening with denim trailblazers like Diesel.
Carved in Blue: What’s your favorite denim trend for Spring 2018?
The Jeans Blog: That’s a tough one! I’m still very much feeling the embroidered denim trend so I’m interested to see where 2018 will take that and how they will make it different to the past seasons!
Carved in Blue: Where do you get your greatest denim inspiration from?
The Jeans Blog: My inspiration comes from all over actually. It can be a mix of seeing certain jeans on other fashion bloggers, seeing cute outfits in the street when I’m out, or simply when I’m browsing the new in section of websites and I see some new jeans and they give me inspiration for an outfit.
There’s a whole mix of it, so it’s not just combined to one place! If I did pick a celebrity though, it would be Hilary Duff, Heidi Klum or Kourtney Kardashian.
Carved in Blue: What’s the one thing you’d like to see in denim that you haven’t seen anyone create yet?
The Jeans Blog: Wow, so many things have been created and the level of crazy has stepped up a notch lately to unwearable, so I’m not sure where else it could go as they’re running out of ideas. My main focus has always been on the blue denim and the authenticity of washes, so I want perfect fits with a focus on beautiful washes. I’d also be open to raw denim becoming a trend and in fits that are flattering to women for a change!
Carved in Blue: If you could describe denim in one word, what would it be?
The Jeans Blog: Everything.
