Juan Carlos Gordillo Storms Vienna Fashion Week With TENCEL™ Infused Collection

Guatemalan designer Juan Carlos Gordillo believes in timeless and daring creations, and he’s bring a new mindful denim collection made with TENCEL™ branded lyocell fibers to Vienna Fashion Week.

The women’s wear collection, called “Discover,” isn’t about following trends, but rather committing to creativity and consciousness at the same time.

It’s an elegant, “modern cowboy-inspired” interpretation of the contemporary woman, according to Gordillo, and each look is unique, with concepts including ruffle details, oversize garments, denim shorts, blouses with asymmetrical details and shirt dresses—all flavored with a little Latin heritage.

Discover is also 100 percent eco-oriented, with half of the 30 outfits in the collection made with recycled fabrics, and the remainder of the collection contains TENCEL™ Denim.

“TENCEL™ Denim was the right choice for me because it proves that eco-fashion doesn’t need to compromise on its look and style: the outfits will look spectacular in the Fashion Show,” Gordillo said, adding, “and the most important thing is that in this way I have the guarantee that I am working with a fabric that was made with a process friendly to the environment.”

The self-taught designer learned his craft in industrial clothing factories and through the eight years he spent in his own workshop. He does not deal in mass production, focusing on a few quantities he can make in his workshop in Guatemala with three sewing machines and one assistant.

“I am a designer that 90 percent does everything. The objectives that I have achieved have been hard work and sometimes it’s not easy,” Gordillo said. Despite that, the designer’s focus is clear. “I’m focused on creating fashion with an ecological philosophy, to a public that thinks eco-fashion is boring. To show this philosophy, it is necessary to have the support of companies that share the same feeling as me.”

“I first met Juan Carlos through social media of our Carved in Blue blog and then another denim industry expert, Panos Sofianos, highlighted his design talent,” said Tricia Carey, director of global business development for denim at Lenzing.  “Juan Carlos presented his design principles and I could immediately understand the culture and spirit he represents.  It is a wonderful connection to have a designer from Central America at Vienna Fashion Week with the fact that Lenzing’s headquarters is also in Austria.”

Vienna has been a focus for Gordillo, and he’s excited to present TENCEL™ Denim designs at Vienna Fashion Week.

“In my collection are outfits made 100 percent with TENCEL™ fibers. These will look spectacular in the show. But I also wanted to combine TENCEL™ with recycled denim. This combination creates a very interesting effect which could call the attention of the public,” Gordillo said.

“Juan Carlos is an artistic designer who immediately understood the beauty of TENCEL™ fibers in the fabrics we produce,“ said Dollen Yao, President of A&A Textiles, fabric supplier of TENCEL™ Denim for the Juan Carlos collection.  “It is wonderful to see his interpretation in  these incredible designs.”

The designer’s Discover collection will be unveiled during a fashion show at Vienna Fashion Week on September 16th at 6:00 p.m.
