TENCEL™ Denim Trends: The Latest from Mills in India

Since in-person trade shows are still put on hold, Carved in Blue is taking an opportunity to digitally connect with its community.

Conventional denim has a significant environmental footprint, but mills are innovating to create materials with less impact. This includes switching to cotton alternatives or blends that include more eco-friendly fibers.

We caught up with denim mills in India to hear their thoughts on low-impact denim and how they are incorporating wood-based TENCEL™ branded fibers into their collections.

Srinivasa Raghavan K, team lead – brands and exports

Carved in Blue: What new groups are you promoting with TENCEL™?

Srinivasa: We are using TENCEL™ Lyocell from Lenzing in our sustainable denim production. We are also developing TENCEL™ Lyocell-blended denims with linen and hemp to be more natural and more sustainable.

Carved in Blue: How do you define the value of lower impact denim?

Srinivasa: With our eco-friendly concepts, in terms of water usage, green energy, dyes and chemical usage and raw material conservation, we are already into the segment of less chemical and carbon footprints. Our denim fabrics used in the garments will have very less EIM scores.

Subrata Ghosh, vice president – product and business development

Carved in Blue: What new groups are you promoting with TENCEL™ Lyocell?

Subrata: TENCEL™ Lyocell was mainly used in our lightweight denim fabrics since long. For the last one year, Nandan denim is selling cotton/TENCEL™ Lyocell/spandex denim. This we are selling as “sustainable denim.”

Also, we have developed samples with warp cotton/TENCEL™ Lyocell blend. This we are promoting to many brands. There is increasing demand of basic denim with TENCEL™ Lyocell blend. More and more developments are going on with TENCEL™ Lyocell blends.

Carved in Blue: How do you define the value of lower impact denim?

Subrata: We can say lower impact denim will get more importance in the coming days.
