Mills Update: Türkiye Denim Manufacturers on Trends and the Textile Market

Over the past few years, the denim industry has had ups and downs as consumer and market demand ebbs and flows.

With the first half of the year in the rearview, Carved in Blue is checking in with denim mills to get their take on how 2024 is shaping up. Are sales rising or falling? What is driving demand? Which trends are taking off? And how are they addressing market needs? Read on to hear insights from Bossa and Tüsa Denim.

BOSSA

V. Besim Özek, strategy & business development director

Carved in Blue: Has the first half of 2024 been up, down or flat for your company?

Besim: The first half 2024 has been the same for Bossa. Almost all of our markets are the same. A wide range of sales organizations and innovative collections are the main key points of Bossa.

Carved in Blue: How would you describe the current demand, and has it changed in recent months?

Besim: Denim fabric demand to Türkiye has always got some ups and downs. The last few months were slow, but we are optimistic for the future.

Carved in Blue: What has surprised you the most about 2024 so far?

Besim: The logistic crisis at Suez Channel and appreciated Turkish Lira were the most important topics for the Turkish denim industry in 2024. Some of the Turkish garment producers moved to Egypt in order to compete for the prices.

Carved in Blue: Which trends or styles do you see gaining traction, and how are you building fabrics to suit these looks?

Besim: Rigid and comfort stretch fabrics are still popular. There is almost no demand for the power stretch denims.

Looks are getting cleaner.

Fabrics have got less slub effect.

TENCEL™ is the second most used fiber in our collection (cotton is always number one). The portion of TENCEL™ is increasing day by day.

Carved in Blue: Could you describe your latest collection launches?

Besim: Hemp and recycled cotton are still very popular. TENCEL™ is the best fiber to increase the performance of these fibers.

Also, our Brown Cotton is a part of our collection as well.

Details will be shown in Kingpins. Don’t miss the surprise.

Carved in Blue: What are your predictions for the second half?

Besim: I hope it will be better. As Bossa, we are very optimistic for the short-term and long-term future.

TÜSA

Vedat Kalay, sales and marketing director

Carved in Blue: Has the first half of 2024 been up, down or flat for your company?

Vedat: As of 2024, the stagnation in both the textile and denim sectors observed globally, fluctuations in market conditions, and most importantly, the low purchasing trend of brands—especially in terms of the European market, which is one of our target markets—caused us to start 2024 more calmly compared to 2023.

Carved in Blue: Which trends or styles do you see gaining traction, and how are you building fabrics to suit these looks?

Vedat: In terms of demands and trends, while rigid and comfort product inquiries are on the rise, we think that inquiries for alternatives that can respond to new colors and more sustainable resources will increase. As Tüsa Denim, we will aim to have long-term cooperation with both our customers and suppliers in terms of both fiber content and color richness.

Within that vision, as Tüsa Denim, we have introduced our Broad Wave collection. Broad, that is, representing rich and comprehensive collection that supports Tüsa Denim’s broad vision.

In the first half of 2024, the themes that the consumers wanted to explore were resilience, warmth, comfort and embracing elements. In addition to that, reflecting the endless possibilities with a panoramic view of winter’s beauty, inspired by global fashion trends such as quiet luxury, bohemian maximalism, Y2K staples, blokecore and of course Western were at the center of our creations.

Carved in Blue: Could you describe your latest collection launches?

Vedat: Broad Wave: Where Tradition Meets Innovation is a comprehensive denim collection, and its name is inspired by Broadway. It’s colorful, dynamic, fun like Broadway musicals and also sophisticated. On the other hand, Broad Wave represents broad vision representing a wide and rich collection with innovative vision. It’s both timeless and contemporary, both sustainable and durable, both traditional and modern, both resilient and elegant. It covers seven sub themes: Legacy that offers authentic heritage; 24/7, comfort with special weaves; Rhythm that celebrates stretch and performance; Sensation, which gives softness that perfectly matches with TENCEL™ fibers; Prestige, where sustainable fibers meet with luxury and are elevated with TENCEL™ fibers; Palette, featuring rich hues of colors; and finally, Cowboy Couture, our Western way.

Carved in Blue: What are your predictions for the second half?

Vedat: Within the start of the second half, our new collection called Sunny Days is cooking well. We are preparing ourselves for the new season with Tüsa Denim’s Sunny Days to experience the ultimate in summer cool. As the temperature rises, staying cool and stylish in denim will be demanded by denim lovers who are not willing to leave their jeans during hot days either.

Sunny Days is aiming to transform the sweltering heat into a season of joy and style for those burning/boiling/too hot days when you still want to shine. This collection offers a curated selection of mid- and lightweight denim fabrics that promise to make you feel as fresh and carefree as the summer breeze.

Responding to the trends like grunge dystopia, resort and preppiness and brat summer, etc., as well as styles like wide-leg and barrel jeans, mid and low rises, overalls and jorts, and more.

Sunny Days will be ready to suit all of these trends and looks that are gaining traction for the second half of the year and will be keeping its place for the upcoming summer searches.
