Moririn Takes TENCEL™ Modal with Indigo Color Technology to Market

Japanese textile trading firm Moririn was founded in 1662 as a cotton brokerage, and it has since expanded its focus to all areas of textile production. Even with its 360-year history, Moririn is committed to innovation. Its latest initiative proves this spirit, as it becomes the first to bring TENCEL™ Modal with Indigo Color technology fibers to market commercially via a new brand called AQUARAIZ.

Instead of indigo being dyed at the yarn stage, TENCEL™ Modal with Indigo Color technology dyes fibers during production. While the modal is still in liquid form, indigo pigment is added. Then when the fibers are extruded, the indigo is embedded into the material. Compared to conventional yarn dyeing, this spun dyed process saves significant water, chemicals and energy.

Moririn was attracted to the spun-dyed modal for its ability to minimize the eco footprint of denim. “We studied conventional indigo process, and it was a good opportunity to consider the current environmental impact,” said Masato Sasaki, business development at Moririn.

Since the indigo color is embedded rather than soaked onto the surface, the resulting modal fibers also boast superior colorfastness. Denim made with TENCEL™ Modal with Indigo Color technology won’t turn other garments blue if they rub together, even in the laundry. Additionally, the fibers have better color retention to keep blue jeans the same shade for longer.

In a digitally driven launch, Aquaraiz debuted on the crowdfunding platform Makuake on Aug. 24. Now through Oct. 30, interested investors can support the project to receive unisex Aquaraiz jeans, which will be delivered beginning in January 2022. Moririn is overseeing the entire production process, with partners in spinning, weaving, sewing, washing and laser finishing.
