Lenzing’s Climate, Forest and Water Action Gets Triple A Score from CDP
For the third year in a row, Lenzing Group has earned a triple A score from CDP, which recognizes our efforts in climate change intervention, forest preservation and water security.
CDP—formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project—is a nonprofit that provides companies, institutions and governments with a disclosure scheme for environmental impact. Just during last year, more than 740 financial institutions requested that companies report about their environmental risks and opportunities through CDP, and the organization has the largest environmental database globally.
Each year, CDP compiles “The A List,” which analyzes companies’ disclosures. Of the around 21,000 companies studied in 2023, just 346 received an A in climate change. Even fewer achieved A’s for water security (101) and deforestation (30). Lenzing is one of just 10 companies that received A scores across all three categories.
“Congratulations to all the companies on CDP’s A List, and those companies that started or accelerated their journey towards environmental transparency in 2023—we saw a 24 percent increase of disclosures last year and that trajectory is to be applauded,” said Sherry Madera, CEO of CDP. “It is only by laying the groundwork of disclosure that companies can show they are serious about the vital part they play in securing a net-zero, nature-positive future.
“Earning a place on the A List is about more than the score. It’s an indication of high-quality, complete data that equips companies with a holistic view of their environmental impact, serves as a baseline for transition plans and—crucially—enables them to follow through on their ambitions,” she continued. “As we move deeper into the Decade of Action, and as CDP continually raises the bar for what represents environmental leadership, the work of A List companies is never complete. We look forward to seeing all companies turn their commitments into further and more meaningful and effective action.”
Lenzing set science-based targets that aim to halve its carbon emissions by 2030 compared to 2017. Looking further ahead, the group is also on the path to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
As a wood-based fiber manufacturer, we are also conscious of the impact our raw material choices have. Lenzing has committed to responsible wood sourcing for our pulp. More than 99 percent of our wood is certified or comes from sources controlled by forest certification. We have also launched conservation and forestation projects, such as a planting initiative and vocational school in Albania.
Lenzing’s total water consumption decreased between 2014 and 2022. We have also developed water-efficient processes, such as the closed-loop production process for TENCEL™ Lyocell that recycles almost all of the water used.
“I am very grateful and proud of what the employees of the Lenzing Group do every day to further expand our leading position in the field of sustainability. Once again being on CDP’s Triple A List as one of the only 10 companies in the world is strong evidence that we are taking the right measures,” said Stephan Sielaff, CEO of the Lenzing Group. “Lenzing is working tirelessly to make the industries in which it operates even more sustainable and to drive the transformation of the textile business model from linear to circular. For this transformation to be successful, further efforts are required from the entire industry.”
