Ian Berry’s New Denim on Denim Book Belongs on Your Coffee Table

For denim lovers, Ian Berry’s new Denim on Denim book promises to deliver on the art of the craft.

Newly launched, Berry’s book delivers on all things denim art for 144 pages—which include 110 full color indigo images. Within those pages, Berry tells the story of the 12 years he’s spent making his artwork based entirely on denim.

We’ve seen many of Ian’s imagery on Instagram, but it’s not the same as showing it in real time at exhibitions and art fairs all over the world.

“The reaction to my work in person is a million times that of what it’s like when they see it on the net on a small iPhone, it’s been an issue for me,” Berry said when talking about the book.

The book, in fact, is meant to bridge the gap between square Insta images and the in-person experience. It holds detailed images of Berry’s installations, like the Secret Garden in New York and the Laundromat at Miami Basel. Denim on Denim also puts forth Berry’s well-known portrait commissions, of people like Debbie Harry and Giorgio Armani.

Ian Berry and Alice

If you ask Alice Tonello from Tonello, the book is certainly not one to miss.

Thumbing through his book is an experience. It takes you on a journey through details, situations, and stories told with uniqueness that only he is capable of. Denim, with all its nuances and its wear-and-tear, makes everything so curious and incredible that it is impossible not to get inspired.”

And for Has Ates from Blackhorse Lane Ateliers, Denim on Denim has been a gift to the industry.

“When I first saw it Ian’s work I was speechless with wonder. It wasn’t just ‘nice’; because of the techniques he used, I wanted to look deeper into the pictures and find lots of details. I thought: ‘only a genius would think of this way of expressing their art’ and the book is a great document of this. Ian shows in his art that nothing should be thrown away and through that we are, at Blackhorse Lane Ateliers, even more encouraged to up cycle our remnants, even the very small off-cuts of denim.”

Reaching to the USA, Evan Morrison from Hudson Hill, a retailer in Greensboro, North Carolina who says:

“Have you ever seen Samuel Morse’s “Gallery of the Louvre” or Panini’s “Modern Rome”?  Art is merely the attempt at the creation of an item capable of captivating an audience.  I mean, don’t get me wrong, da Vinci was a master and his work iconic, but when you see Panini’s work down the hall, the Mona Lisa is immediately forgotten while at the Louvre in Paris.  Art succeeds when it stops you in your tracks and leaves you awestruck.  While I’ve not yet seen his art in real life, Ian’s works achieve just this, the ability to be a showstopper even when surrounded by other great works.  Whether in a museum, gallery, or a home, his work transcends the canvas, and imprints in the mind a lasting memory to share and tell your friends about.  I can’t wait to see them in their full-scale size!”
