London Showcase Lays Out Sustainable, Circular Future for Denim

What is the future for denim? For one, it must change to become more sustainable and meet the growing demands for transparency from consumers and the industry. Two, denim needs to respond to changes in attitudes and styles to keep its place in wardrobes and wallets.

On Oct. 10, the Mills Fabrica gathered industry figures to discuss the path ahead and launch its Denim Futures Exhibition. The event was held at the incubator’s Fabrica X innovation showcase and store in London nearby to King’s Cross.

The day included a series of educational sessions that covered the entire life cycle of denim, from design to dyeing, and cotton farming to circularity. Speakers included our very own Tuncay Kilickan, who joined a panel about the Future of Manufacturing. Endrime Studio’s Mohsin Sajid kicked off the day with a lecture on denim history. Other speakers included former Levi Strauss design head Jonathan Cheung, consultant Kelly Harrington, Francesca Sieler of Bank & Vogue, Cyndi Rhoades of Worn Again, Francois Souchet of BPCM, Dolores Naharro of FibreTrace, Walden Lam of Unspun, Arshiya Lal of Circ, Justin Shoji of Huue, and Laura Pizzato of Nature Coatings, among others.

“The denim industry’s transformation can gain significant momentum by fostering strategic collaboration, holding transparent conversations and instilling a forward-thinking mindset across the entire denim ecosystem of stakeholders,” the Mills Fabrica UK wrote on Instagram about the Denim Futures campaign.

In addition to speaking, Lenzing was among the exhibitors. We spotlighted our TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers, as well as our ECOVERO™ Viscose, which now is available with REFIBRA™ technology. There are also displays from our mill partner AGI Denim, our frequent collaborator Officina+39 and circular fiber producer Renewcell, another Lenzing partner. Exhibitors also include Circ, Good Earth Cotton, Huue, Nature Coatings, Nextevo, Wizcot and Xeros Tech.

The exhibits will be up at Fabrica X through March 31, allowing designers and others in the industry to come and be inspired. Admission is free—you can get a ticket here.
