Meet Billy, Jeanologia’s Artificially Intelligent Denim Finishing Design Tool

The fashion industry is continuing to weave artificial intelligence into more aspects of the product creation process, using the technology to ramp up efficiency and creativity.
AI is now entering the denim laundry with Jeanologia’s new tool, Billy. This AI design solution can take images of denim garments and turn them into laser designs. With the popularity of vintage-style washes, this tool helps teams translate the aesthetics of prior decades into new, low-impact finishing techniques. Jeanologia trained the AI on around 9,000 of its laser designs, providing it with the basis to be able to make suggestions to users. Jeanologia says Billy trims hours off the process of creating these laser designs, and eliminates the need for manual adjustments.
At Kingpins China – Hangzhou, Jeanologia hosted live demos of Billy. China is a key market for the machinery maker, since roughly 20 percent of all jeans made in the country are produced using Jeanologia technology.
To get the scoop on this new AI solution, Carved in Blue spoke with Carmen Silla, global marketing director of Jeanologia.
Carved in Blue: What need did you see for a denim-specific AI design tool?
Carmen: Denim is all about authenticity. The most desirable garments are often those that tell a story through natural wear, fading and the passage of time. Designers constantly look to vintage pieces for inspiration because they represent the character and authenticity that consumers value most.
At the same time, fashion moves faster than ever. Brands need to develop more collections, react quickly to trends and bring products to market in shorter timelines, all while reducing their environmental impact.
We saw a clear opportunity to connect these two worlds. How could we capture the authenticity of vintage denim and translate it into production-ready designs in a faster, more efficient and more sustainable way?
Billy was created to do exactly that. It allows designers to start from authentic inspiration—whether a vintage garment, an archive piece or a visual reference—and transform it into a precise laser design in minutes. The goal is not to replace creativity, but to give designers more time to create, explore and innovate while preserving the natural character and authenticity that make denim unique.
Carved in Blue: How did you train Billy on the intricacies of laser finishing? What ongoing training are you going to do to help it keep up with new trends and finishing technologies?
Carmen: At Jeanologia, we have spent more than 25 years studying how denim ages, how authentic wear patterns are created, and how those effects can be translated into laser designs. Over that time, we built an archive of thousands of laser designs and production references developed together with leading brands and manufacturers around the world.
Billy was trained using this unique knowledge base, learning from more than 9,000 laser designs and real denim finishing data. This allows the AI to understand the subtle details that make a garment look authentic, from whiskers and fades to the natural contrasts that develop over time.
What makes Billy different is that it was not trained on generic fashion images. It was trained on real denim, real production knowledge and decades of laser expertise.
Looking ahead, Billy will continue to evolve. As new trends, fabrics, finishing techniques and creative approaches emerge, we will expand and refine its training datasets through controlled updates. Our vision is for Billy to become a living platform that grows alongside the industry, continuously incorporating new knowledge while remaining grounded in authentic denim craftsmanship.
The goal is simple: combine the heritage of denim with the possibilities of artificial intelligence, ensuring that Billy remains relevant, accurate and connected to the future of denim design.

Carved in Blue: Some are skeptical of bringing AI into creative areas. Why has Jeanologia embraced machine intelligence for these functions?
Carmen: We have never seen AI as a replacement for creativity. We see it as a tool that helps unlock it.
At Jeanologia, we believe the designer will always be at the center of the creative process. Creativity comes from human intuition, culture, emotions and experience. What AI can do is remove technical barriers and repetitive tasks, giving designers more time to focus on ideas, experimentation and storytelling.
We often describe Billy as a creative ally. It assists designers by transforming inspiration into production-ready laser designs in minutes, allowing them to explore more concepts, test more possibilities and bring ideas to life faster than ever before.
In that sense, Billy does not make creative decisions. The designer remains the author. Billy simply provides the speed, precision and technical expertise needed to turn creative vision into reality.

Billy is named after one of the most iconic garments in the Jeanologia archive, a pair of WWII jeans that tell a unique story through their fades, repairs and wear patterns. For decades, Jeanologia has studied vintage garments like this to understand how denim ages naturally and what makes a product feel authentic.

That knowledge is the foundation of Billy. The AI has been trained on thousands of laser designs developed over more than 25 years of denim expertise, learning how to interpret and reproduce the natural characteristics that define vintage denim.
In a way, Billy is like a new Jeanologist. It captures decades of craftsmanship and know-how, making it accessible to designers around the world. Rather than creating artificial effects, it helps preserve the authenticity, character and natural beauty of vintage garments.
