Panther Denim Details the ‘New Era of Denim’
Denim is in a diversification moment. It’s no longer just about jeans, and brands are rolling out denim options in shirting, skirts, jackets and more.
Changes are also happening at the material level, as companies diversify beyond cotton. Tat Fung Textiles and Panther Denim is among the mills innovating with alternative fibers that offer a different texture, hand feel and aesthetic than cotton.
Here, Panther Denim talks to Carved in Blue about what consumers are looking for and how it is using Lenzing’s fibers.

Panther Denim: The demand for rigid and comfort stretch denim is still growing, as we are witnessing a significant emergence of denim skirts in the market. A new era of denim has arrived, with interpretations that go beyond traditional five-pocket jeans.

Carved in Blue: What is the sustainable story behind this collection?

Panther Denim: We have an idea that involves giving cotton a break. We incorporate a significant amount of matte TENCEL™ Lyocell, TENCEL™ Lyocell Standard, LENZING™ ECOVERO™ Viscose, TENCEL™ Modal with Indigo Color technology, and TENCEL™ Modal Standard to reduce the consumption of cotton. While we appreciate the vintage perspective of cotton, we believe that its aesthetic can be enhanced by blending it with various botanical fibers mentioned above.

Carved in Blue: How you combine TENCEL™ Fibers into your sustainable concept?

Panther Denim: TENCEL™ fibers are fantastic and versatile, and we have our engineers who design the best construction for the fibers to suit different purposes. For instance, we have developed matte TENCEL™ Lyocell fabrics that closely resemble and feel like cotton. Additionally, we have created exceptionally soft cotton/TENCEL™ Lyocell blends with a feminine touch. Our unique expertise plays a vital role, but we can’t divulge too many details here.

Panther Denim: Panther Denim and Tat Fung Textile’s commitment to sustainability dates back to the 1980s, a period when global concerns about sustainability were not as prominent. In our factory, we have implemented stringent regulations to ensure that all wasted water is reprocessed, and it is only released when it poses no harm to the local wildlife. We are grateful to have inspired many local factories, who have followed in our footsteps to minimize their environmental impact. The city we call home is truly remarkable, with its picturesque lake and numerous heritage buildings.
