SDW22 Lookbook: Trucker Jacket

The denim jacket has a long and rich history. Worn by the working class and celebrities alike, it has lasting universal appeal.

In terms of modern-day designs, many labels have used the Levi’s Trucker Jacket as a foundation and applied their own details that are markers of each brand’s unique DNA.

Many times, this meant construction with luxury materials and techniques that have elevated the denim jacket to a status symbol. Other times, it means removing the more expensive production points out of the process, so that the masses can enjoy a timeless wardrobe staple.

Reportedly, it was a group of Japanese denim collectors, having an obsessive approach to American style, that initiated the transformation of this particular jacket into an icon, when they came up with the jacket’s now accepted name: the Trucker.

The Trucker was the third iteration of Levi’s denim jacket, known as Type III Lot number 557XX. It was the aforementioned overseas Americana fanatics who observed that this was the go-to jacket for truckers, and that over a lifetime of being exposed to life on the American highways, the jackets took on a fade and patina that was most attractive to these vintage denim devotees.

The Type III was a complete modification from the previous jackets, coming in as the first jacket to feature the now famous pointed pocket flaps, the slim fitting cut that ends at the waist and two V-shaped seams that run from chest pocket to waist.

The trucker is the kind of timeless style that no matter the version, is a must in everyone’s wardrobe. Not only home on the ranch, it found equal popularity among a very different audience: hippies, rockers, activists, bikers—almost every corner of ‘60s, ‘70s and ’80s counter-culture. It’s a classic unisex garment that transcends seasons, status and, of course, gender.

The 13.75 oz fabric employed here is supplied by Bossa Denim based out of Adana, Turkey. Fabric composition consists of TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™, post-consumer cotton and hemp.

A couple of wash-down tones have been achieved on our Trucker. The one in the image is a vintage-inspired medium wash with a laser pattern that reproduces a natural worn-in look for a classic appeal.

Special attention to the rips and tears was achieved using the Light Ripper tools. The designs for the damage are created through Jeanologia’s laser software eDesigner, and the eMark laser production software creates the rips with high precision and speed.
