SDW22 Lookbook: Trucker Jacket 2

Once a perfect symbol of conformity and traditional values, in the second half of the 20th century the denim jacket became ingrained into youth culture as an instantly recognizable signpost for rebellion and counterculture.

The denim jacket was one of the first unisex pieces of clothing, looking good on both men and woman alike. It was perfect for the new women’s liberation and sexual freedoms. What could be more equal than a jacket that both genders could comfortably wear without judgment or restriction?

The first-ever denim jacket—that can be dated back to 1874—was found by Mike Harris in Nevada and acquired by Levi’s Archive in 2008. This rewrote history, as previously it was believed that the Type 1 jacket dated to 1905.

The Type 2 jacket in the early 1950s and Type 3 from the early 1960s (probably the most recognizable jacket style today) followed.

Also during the early 1960’s, Levi’s introduced the 557XX, also known as the Trucker Jacket. This jacket was a complete modification from the previous jackets, coming in as the first jacket to feature the now famous pointed pocket flaps and a slim fitting cut.

This version of our trucker jacket is designed to be a low-impact, tech-made, vintage look which incorporates fabric from Bossa Denim. The eFlow nano-bubbles technology is used to create a brownish tint on top of a light wash, complimented by tears and rips made with laser.

We have combined different techniques to come with placement on the reverse of the jacket: depicting the lady with loose flowing hair, one of our iconic illustrations, created to represent femininity and freedom, together with our motto “Always look on the bright side of life,” in clear reference to Monty Python. A fitting slogan for our times, with a hint to and hope for an optimistic future.

Our Hidden Treasures are also present in this jacket. Made with the most accurate laser technology in the market, the Nano Laser by Jeanologia, the Hidden Treasures symbolize those little everyday delights that make us feel better. Placed strategically in the pocket flaps, inner waistband or on the cuffs, this customization fosters emotional connection to the garment, conferring personal attachment through the garment finishing itself. In our opinion, it is a must to create connection between the different parts of the design: the fit, sewing details, the finish and, of course, the concept.
