The denim industry has been working to curb its water impact by innovating with new materials and dyeing processes.

Now, both low-impact fibers and low-impact indigo dyeing are coming together with Spanish fabric manufacturer Tejidos Royo using TENCEL ™ Denim. Dubbed ‘Dry Lyocell’, the fabric contains 100 percent TENCEL™ Lyocell and is dyed using Tejidos’ Dry Indigo process.

TENCEL™ Lyocell already has low environmental footprint. The fiber from Lenzing utilizes trees to make pulp using a closed loop, circular production process that recycles solvents.

Dry Indigo dyeing, developed by Tejidos Royo in collaboration with Gaston Systems Inc. and Indigo Mill Designs (IMD), uses absolutely no water. Since no water goes in, there is no liquid discharge. Based on an audit by The Textile Industry Research Association (AITEX), this dyeing process also reduces chemical consumption by 89 percent and energy use by 65 percent.

Tejidos Royo’s Dry Indigo is part of its Sustainable Denim Collection for Spring/Summer 2022. Click through the slideshow above for a first look at the fabric.
