Spinning a Yarn with Woody Trilogy
Once upon a time there were two longtime partners in denim sustainability who were looking to bring their game to the next level.
And so Woody Trilogy was born, a sustainable story told in three parts by Kings of Indigo and TENCEL™.
The Woody Trilogy collection of jeans, skirts, pants and shirts features a trifecta of symbols depicting the closed-loop fiber production process, from wood chips to pulp, showing how the water-saving cellulosic fibers are made. These icons tell the eco-conscious tale of Kings of Indigo’s soft and smooth garments that are made with resources, environmental impact (and people) in mind.
The legend will be chronicled at a pop-up store Oct. 22-27 in Elandsgracht in Amsterdam, to time with both Kingpins and Amsterdam Denim Days, where Kings of Indigo will have a Hacked By_ collab capsule collection made with deadstock fabrics made from TENCEL™ Lyocell to mark the occasion.
Carved in Blue chatted with Tony Tonnaer, CEO of Kings of Indigo, to learn more about the story behind the story.
Carved in Blue: Why should someone come to Amsterdam Denim Days?
Tony: What’s so nice about denim and innovation is the world behind it—how it’s created, the rich history and its vision on the future. What else can you make from denim rather than just a five-pocket? How can you upcycle this?
To know the people behind the brand and to learn their thoughts all comes together on Denim Days.
Carved in Blue: Tell us the story of the Woody Trilogy and why it’s important to Kings of Indigo.
Tony: From the day Kings of Indigo started we have been using TENCEL™ Lyocell as a cornerstone for our women’s collection. We love this fabric as it’s one of the ways to use less (organic) cotton, which uses a lot of water to grow and doesn’t have the same closed loop process as TENCEL™ Lyocell. The Woody Trilogy explains the journey how garments made with TENCEL™ Lyocell are made primarily from eucalyptus wood—grown in sustainable forests—to yarn, to fabrics and garments. It tells how a tree becomes your favorite sustainable dress.
Carved in Blue: What is in the Hacked By_ special collaboration at Denim Days?
Tony: With Kings of Indigo we love to use the best sustainable fabrics to make the favorite pieces for your closet, classics you can wear for years. In collaboration with Hacked By_, we like to show that even from quality leftover collections you can make cutting-edge designs, on this occasion emphasizing the nature of fabrics made with TENCEL™ Lyocell. It’s a showcase of how you can think out of the box and also that the fabric is versatile and can be worn for a very long time, over and over again. With KOI and Hacked By_ we prove that sustainable fashion is quality and very fashion forward.
Carved in Blue: What are you looking forward to having in the KOI pop-up shop? What can people find there?
Tony: I love to work with our valuable partners to make a showcase to consumers about the coolness and content, but also the necessity of sustainable fashion. We think that consumers are very open to changing their way of purchasing clothes, but often don’t know exactly how dirty the fast fashion industry is and how they can select the right clean garments.
By having a pop-up with TENCEL™ and Hacked By_, we will be showing our consumers how to clean up their closets and still look great, while educating them in a fun way. We are proud of being part of this “slow” fashion revolution and want to share that and encourage people to join in too.
