Carved In Blue Honors Jeanologia on World Water Day

As we take time on World Water Day to focus on the importance of water to the universe—and our industry—we thought it would be a good time to celebrate a company that’s made major advancements throughout the year to make our blue planet a greener one.

For more than two decades, Jeanologia has remained focused on the development of sustainable and eco-responsible strategies for garment finishing, and it’s only going to continue to do so.

“If we develop products in an eco-efficient way, we will produce an eco-sustainable product and bring a sustainable product to the market, achieving one of our company’s objectives: to reduce environmental impact in its entirety, not partially mitigate it,” Jeanologia CEO Enrique Silla, said.IMG_2014

The Spanish company has positioned itself as an expert technology partner for the garment industry with its water-saving systems. It has also built a reputation as a pioneer for the detoxification of denim, with its elimination of potassium permanganate, pumice stone, manual scraping—which have long been traditional washing techniques—alongside its techniques for reducing chemical use.

These are prime examples of why 35 percent of the 5 billion jeans produced every year are made with Jeanologia technology.

The company’s laser, G2 ozone and e-flow systems have been used in 60 countries. Employing these processes has saved roughly 800,000 cubic meters of water in the last month alone, the equivalent of the water it would take to fill 283 Olympic-size swimming pools. And in 2017, its technology contributed to saving about 8 million cubic meters of water.

Jeanologia believes that with the company as a partner all jeans will be 100 percent water free by 2025. “With Jeanologia as the expert technology partner, it is possible, within a few years, for production to use zero water and create zero waste; increasing productivity and accelerating time to market,” Silla said.

Furthering its sustainability efforts, Jeanologia partnered with Lenzing on a “light sensitive” study to show the benefits of laser technology when using fabrics containing TENCEL™ Lyocell branded fibers.

Fabrics with TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers allow for effective dye removal, clear image definition and smooth grey scale transition—each of which are key for effective laser marketing, Jeanologia told Carved in Blue in an earlier interview.

These types of technologies are what’s advancing the denim sector and lightening the load placed on the environment. As sustainability and water stewardship become more important to consumers and major stakeholders, we will continue to highlight those in the denim industry that are playing their part.
