What Did Carved in Blue Mean to 2019?
A Carved in Blue interview wouldn’t be complete without asking our subjects what we mean to them. And while, yes, we admit we love the compliments—can you blame us?—what we really appreciate is the window these responses provide into how denimheads view our entire industry.
As we close out 2019, we’re revisiting just a few of our favorites.
Happy New Year!
Peter Lantz, co-owner, REDEW8: “I guess it means that my personality is ‘carved in blue.’ It was and is not really a choice. Once you discover something you love, you should embrace it and enjoy wherever it takes you.”
Vivian Wang, managing director, Kingpins: “Carved in Blue is a voice for the industry, insight and sharing.”
Cenker Akdemir, design and product development director, Taypa: “Carved in Blue is an important platform that connects people from all across the denim industry. It’s where we get fresh news about the industry with a sincere view.”
Begoña Garcia, sustainability and product manager, Jeanologia: “The possibility to know better about our industry and the people that work on it—in a nice way.”
Özge Özsoy, marketing chief, Bossa: “Carved in Blue has adopted sustainability as a principle and makes it widespread in the industry. It is a blog for the industry to share in all the available knowledge about circularity and sustainability.”
Anthony Lilore, founder and chief re-designer at THROW.NYC: “Carved in Blue may just as well be Carved in my Heart. Carved in my DNA like a love note in a rock. Given a world in nearly constant flux, there is comfort, emotionally and physically, in that which is grounded. Grounded, not inflexible but rooted, much like the Beech and Eucalyptus from which TENCELTM Lyocell or Modal are born. Carved in Blue is a commitment to our own truth and to a sustainability promise forever carved in stone. No eraser. No do-overs. Permanence.”
Adam Taubenfligel, creative director and designer, Triarchy: “Carved in Blue means a mindset of understanding how incredible denim is, being respectful of how damaging it can be to our planet, and pooling together to find new and better ways to make the indigo garments we all love so much. That’s what it means to me.”
Mohsin Sajid, creative director, and Sadia Rafique, art director, Endrime: “To us, Carved in Blue represents transparency, education and an awareness in the future approach of responsible denim production.”
Rizwan Shafi, executive director, Crescent: “First and foremost, it’s a meeting place, a digital town hall. For anyone who has built a career around denim, be it a designer, pattern maker or a buyer, we all have wonderful stories to share and ideas to propose. Carved in Blue has provided us all an essential platform to communicate and guide our industry towards a greener future.”
